Tour Details

At the designated time, we'll meet at the Complejo Rural Agoga in the village of Las Médulas to begin our visit. Ready to explore an other-worldly landscape?

We'll first set off along the Valiñas Path, a circular route that leads from the village directly into the heart of the ancient mine. As we walk, we'll tell you the story of this place, which begins long before the Romans arrived. In the Iron Age, this land was home to a Celtic people the Romans called the Astures, who lived in fiercely independent hillforts and worked the gold from the river basins into jewelry and decorative objects, valuing it for its beauty rather than its wealth.

Walking at low altitude through the workings themselves, we'll come face to face with the scale of what Rome did here: an entire mountain deliberately collapsed to extract the gold inside, along with the vast network of water channels that made it possible.

Our route will take us to the Encantada and Cuevona caves, two of the most striking spaces carved out of the mountainside, where the sheer ambition of Roman engineering becomes impossible to ignore.

From there, we'll return to the village along a different path, wrapping up this 2-hour tour back at our starting point in Las Médulas.
